A little over a mile north of the Bird Island Boat Basin in the Padre Island National Seashore, South Bird Island is a long dagger shaped island surrounded by grass flats and sand pockets. The drop offs on the Intracoastal side and around the area spoil banks are productive for trout year round. The grassy flats and potholes between the island and the boat ramp at the Bird Island Boat Basin and north to through Nighthawk Bay are good for redfish all year.
